A Seven Point Plan for a Healthy HoustonMake utilities like electricity and gas publicly owned. This will lead to lower prices for consumers, increase conservation, and make those industries accountable to the citizens of Houston. Upgrade public transit; create a healthier city for pedestrians, bike riders, and the physically challenged. Vastly expand rail, the bus system and build safer, reliable bike lanes. Actually sweep the streets. Many bike lanes are filled with detritus. Implement Instant Runoff Voting for municipal elections. This could save Houston millions of dollars every election cycle. Improve flood control. Minimize impervious cover, maximize green space. Invest more of the city budget in affordable housing and revitalize existing neighborhoods, instead of gentrification. Focus our organization energies and money towards crime prevention rather than simply locking up young people after they commit crimes. Attract progressive, environmentally friendly, small-to-medium-sized companies to provide jobs with livable wages and to reduce commuting time and expense. |
